Advocating for LGBTQ+ Health in Philadelphia: Past, Present, Future
APRIL 16, 2025
The Queer Inclusion, Equity, Health, & Rights (QuIEHR) working group comprises Drexel community members and community partners engaging in research, education, training, practice, and advocacy related to public health, medicine, human rights, and social inclusion for sexual and gender minority (SGM) populations. Please join the QuIEHR Working Group at the Dornsife School of Public health on Wednesday, April 16th (12:00 pm - 6:00 pm) for the 3rd annual Symposium for Sexual and Gender Minority Health.
The hybrid symposium, titled Advocating for LGBTQ+ Health in Philadelphia: Past, Present, Future, will explore the pivotal role of advocacy in shaping health outcomes for LGBTQ+ Philadelphians, focusing on past achievements, present challenges, and future opportunities. This event will bring together activists, researchers, healthcare providers, and community leaders to reflect on historical movements that laid the groundwork for progress in LGBTQ+ health, such as the fight for HIV/AIDS awareness and marriage equality. Discussions will highlight current issues, including health disparities, access to affirming care, and legislative barriers impacting LGBTQ+ individuals. The symposium will also create a space for envisioning a healthier, more equitable future, emphasizing the importance of intersectional advocacy and community-led solutions in addressing evolving needs. By examining the intersections of activism and health, the event aims to inspire collaborative efforts and innovative strategies to advance SGM health equity in Philadelphia and beyond.
The symposium is open to the Drexel community and the Public. Registration is required. Lunch will be provided for in-person attendees and a reception will follow the keynote. In-person attendees who would like to reserve a lunch should register no later than Tuesday, April 15th. Zoom registration will remain open until the start of the symposium.
Those who cannot attend for the full day are welcome to join us to hear the keynote speech (beginning at 4:00 pm). Our keynote speaker will be the Executive Director of GALAEI and newly appointed Director of LGBTQ+ Affairs for Philadelphia, Tyrell Brown!
